Northern Va Hiking
Appalachian trail trip question?

A friend and I are planning a 5 to 7 day backpacking trip on the trail in either late September or early October. We plan on doing 54 miles of the trail in northern Virginia and finishing in West Virginia. The starting point I chose was Front Royal VA where we will be dropped off to Harpers Ferry WV where someone will pick us up. My question is are we allowed to camp anywhere along the trail with our tents, or do we have to stay at designated camp grounds and shelters? We really wanted to just set up camp each evening in the woods, I know in Maryland you have to stay at the shelters so if anyone who has hiked this section before and can help us out id greatly appreciate it, I tried researching this and cant get a solid answer, Thanks!

You contacted the Appalachian Mountain Club, but the group that runs the Appalachian Trail is the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. appalachiantrail.org. They can answer all of your specific questions. Sorry for the confusion, and good luck! Wally Herrod.
