budget backpacking india

Have you been to India on holiday? If so what attracted you? or If you haven’t been, what will make you go?
Just trying to figure out the best holiday packages to India. Please, if you don’t mind let me know what age group you are and what sort tour would you like to make in terms budget. (backpacking..standard.. luxury..)
I’ve been to India twice now, the first time for 3 months and just recently for a couple of weeks. I love it! I’ve been to Mumbai, Delhi, Taj Mahal, Himachal Pradesh (himalayan foothills – spectacular), Pushkar in Rajhastan, Hampi and Gokarna in Karnataka and Palolem in Goa. Oh, and also Amritsar in Punjab.
I’m in my late twenties and both times have had a fairly tight budget, which meant staying in cheap guesthouses, which I actually quite enjoyed, as you meet lots of other travellers and this quite often will give you ideas of where to go next. I find as long as you have your own sheet and pillow case, you feel a lot better, as some (but by no means all) cheaper guesthouses may feel a bit dirty. It ‘s pretty easy to travel around cheaply by bus and train, but this can sometimes take a while (anyone for a 36 hour train journey?), but is also the best way to see India, in my opinion.
I find the indian culture fascinating, so vibrant and full of life. The people are amazing – very friendly and willing to help you. All the various religions and temples are really interesting too.
The poverty can be a bit overwhelming at times, and I found it quite hard when confronted with beggars, but you just need to realise that you cannot give money to everyone.
The food is great too, definitely a place to go veggie. There are so many great dishes.
Good point made above about biting nails – don’t do it in India!
